Wonders K-4 Literacy Curriculum
Program Summary
Wonders is designed based on the Science of Reading to foster a love of reading in all children. This focus represents a key difference between Wonders 2013 (previously used at Jordan Elementary) and Wonders 2020, which emphasizes the latest research and phonics awareness based on instructional efficacy.
By providing a comprehensive set of connected resources for all learners in grades K–4, Wonders empowers educators to differentiate instruction with confidence. With a focus on the whole child, the program prepares students to be lifelong learners and critical thinkers.
Wonders integrates research on literacy and social-emotional learning to strengthen skills, promote independence, and support meaningful classroom experiences every day.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Wonders incorporates SEL through a partnership with Sesame Workshop and alignment with the CASEL framework, offering an integrated SEL approach across the curriculum.
Educational Equity
Wonders supports educational equity (not to be confused with Critical Race Theory) by ensuring every student receives a high-quality education tailored to their needs—whether developing, on-level, or advanced. An equitable classroom provides all students with the support needed to master rigorous academics.
Supporting Resources from McGraw Hill
Educators are encouraged to review McGraw Hill’s materials for in-depth information about Wonders 2020:

These resources include independent efficacy studies, district testimonials, and educator perception surveys.
Jordan Elementary Instructional Goal
Implement the 2020 Wonders curriculum—transitioning from a Balanced Literacy approach to a Science of Reading model, with strong emphasis on phonics awareness.
Curriculum Background
Jordan Elementary implemented Wonders 2013 in 2014 after a thorough adoption process. At the end of the 2020–2021 school year, the district’s online license expired, and the 2013 program was no longer fully supported or aligned with current literacy research.
The updated Wonders 2020 version provides comprehensive tools such as writing companions, leveled readers, and diagnostic assessments to fully support classroom literacy.
Important Note
Wonders 2020 is an update to the existing curriculum—not a full adoption of a new program. As an update, it brings reduced cost and smoother transition for staff and students—an important factor following the challenges of COVID disruptions.
