Music Moves Me!

Music at Jordan Elementary School is not what many of you remember it as when you were a child. The most common remark I receive from parents after they have sat in on one of my classes is:

"WOW! I don't remember music class being like this when I was in school. All we did was sit around in chairs and sing songs."

Well, there are no chairs and we don't just sit around singing songs for 50 minutes each week. Music is movement — and that is exactly what we do. Music class at Jordan Elementary School is very interactive. Students learn musical concepts such as rhythm reading, dynamic and tempo changes, solfege singing and reading, keeping a steady beat, and much more — all through movement.

We take songs, rhymes, poems, and stories and bring them to life through acting, movement, props, and instrumental sound effects and accompaniments.

Music appreciation is also an important part of our program. Students learn about composers and musical styles from around the world. They listen to musical pieces, identify the instruments they hear, and use their imagination to describe the mood, colors, or imagery the music evokes.

Each year, students also have an opportunity to perform for parents, families, and friends. They work hard and have lots of fun preparing songs and speaking parts for programs that are both entertaining and educational. Program dates are shared during the school year, and families are always encouraged to attend.

You're invited to visit a music class at Jordan Elementary School and see for yourself how much it has changed.

Remember, MUSIC IS MOVEMENT, so be prepared to move!

Music Curriculum

Music is movement and that is exactly what we do. Music class at Jordan Elementary School is very interactive. The students learn many musical concepts such as rhythm reading, dynamic and tempo changes, solfege singing and reading, keeping a steady beat, and much more through their bodies. We take songs, rhymes, poems and stories and bring them to life through acting them out with movement, props and instrumental sound effects and accompaniments.

Music appreciation is also another area that the students at Jordan Elementary School are exposed to. The students learn all about different composers and their music, plus various styles of music from all over the world. They listen to pieces and are able to identify the instruments they hear and use their imagination to describe the mood, colors or pictures they see as they listen.

Finally, each year the students have an opportunity to perform for you, the parents, your families and friends. The students work very hard and have lots of fun learning the songs and speaking parts to programs that are very entertaining and teach important lessons.
