What's Cool in Our School: Third Graders Explore Jordan’s History and City Government

Earlier this month, Jordan Elementary School grade three students had the special opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the heart of our community. They were invited to visit the Jordan History Center, where they learned fascinating stories about the early settlers who helped shape the City of Jordan. Students explored historical artifacts and learned how Jordan has grown over time.

After their time at the History Center, students made their way to City Hall, where Mayor Travis Fremming and City Administrator Tom Nikunen offered a behind-the-scenes look at how local government works. Mayor Fremming and Mr. Nikunen answered student questions and listened to creative ideas for new parks, restaurants, and community spaces in Jordan. Their enthusiasm made city government come alive in an engaging and memorable way for the students.

“The students loved hearing the stories about the early days of our community and seeing how decisions are made to keep Jordan growing and thriving,” shared third grade teacher Laura Theis.

The field trip was not only a real-world learning experience but also a celebration of community connection. This was the first year of what is planned to become an annual tradition for Jordan Elementary School’s third graders—an opportunity to explore the city’s history, meet local leaders, and develop a deeper appreciation for the place they call home.
